Shelby Rogers, Nicole Melichar and Magda Linette earned their bachelor’s degree diplomas from Indiana University East through the educational partnership with the WTA. The women’s tennis professionals celebrated their graduation on Sunday in Cincinnati, while qualifying matching were happening at the Western & Southern Open.
Two-time Grand Slam quarterfinalist Rogers shared her excitement on Twitter:
Proud to say I am finally a college graduate! Thank you to IU East and WTA for the opportunity to get my education while living out my dream! When I turned pro after high school I promised myself and my mom that I would get that diploma! Forever an Indiana University grad!
Our photographer Jimmie48 attended the graduation ceremony, so we’re lucky to have these exclusive pics.
The Indiana University East partnership with the Women’s Tennis Benefits Association (WTBA) started in 2013. The education is done online. It accommodates the globetrotting lifestyle of athletes and allows them to complete their bachelor’s degrees while continuing to play on the WTA Tour. Venus Williams, Sloane Stephens and many other tennis players have graduated with bachelor’s degrees through this program.
