Canada’s Leylah Fernandez is starting the 2022 season in new tennis apparel. The former Asics representative now looks to be wearing Lululemon, although no clothing sponsorship deal has been confirmed, at least not yet.
The 19-year-old Fernandez made headlines last year with her runner-up finish at the US Open. The teenager was sponsored by Asics in her breakthrough season and the last Asics outfit she wore was the Fall Match Tank and Fall Match Skirt at the 2021 BNP Paribas Open in October. Her sneakers were the Asics Gel Resolution 8, which were voted as the most stable/durable footwear in the 2021 Best Tennis Shoes list.
New seasons often bring new clothing contracts. Our photographer Jimmie48 has crossed paths with the world No.24 Fernandez multiple times these days in Adelaide, Australia, and the numerous photos clearly show that her tennis apparel is not Asics. At closer inspection, we can see the subtle Lululemon logo.
The American-Canadian multinational sportswear company has recently announced a partnership with Australian WTA player Daria Saville, so it could be that they are determined to increase their presence in tennis. Previously, we had seen their apparel on pro tennis players, but only a few times.
In her first-round victory over Ekaterina Alexandrova at the Adelaide International 1 on Monday, Fernandez sported the emerald Lululemon Swiftly Tech Racerback Tank Top 2.0 and the black Play Off the Pleats Mid-Rise Skirt.
During a practice session on Saturday, we could see Fernandez in a Lululemon sports bra and high-waisted red shorts. Here’s a closeup of the logo.
Fernandez still wears Asics tennis shoes.
My bet is that she’s joining Nike…
There seems to be a lot of clothing sponsor changes. Maybe an article on the “clothing carousel” might be in order. 🙂
Chesko, I think we had more clothing sponsor changes in previous years. I don’t have much info about confirmed new apparel sponsors of players. Whom would you include in that article?
