Amanda Anisimova saved two match points to knock out defending champion Naomi Osaka in the third round of the 2022 Australian Open, 4-6 6-3 7-6 (10-5).
The world No.60 Anisimova snapped a nine-match losing streak against Top 20 players as she recorded a memorable victory over Osaka, a two-time Australian Open champion who had won 24 of her past 25 matches in the city of Melbourne.
The 13th-seeded Osaka kicked off the match with a break and held on to it throughout the first set. In the second set, Anisimova was the first one to go up a break, in the fourth game, and she also kept that lead to claim the set.
The decider went with serve all the way to the tiebreak, although Osaka was close to victory as she held two match points on Anisimova’s serve at 5-4. As the match got into a tiebreak, Anisimova opened it with a 3-0 lead and never again faced a deficit.
Another Grand Slam champion awaits Anisimova in the round of 16, as the American is scheduled to face world No.1 Ashleigh Barty, the Australian who has lost just eight games so far at the tournament. Both players have already won WTA titles this season: Anisimova won Melbourne Summer Set 2, Barty triumphed at the Adelaide International.
