Favorite Iga Swiatek served another bagel as she progressed into the third round of Roland Garros, while fellow former champion Simona Halep got knocked out by a Chinese teenager.
Top seed Iga Swiatek continues to solidify her dominance on the Hologic WTA Tour, this time with a rapid 6-0 6-2 victory over Alison Riske in the second round on Court Suzanne-Lenglen. The Pole took just 61 minutes to extend her winning streak to 30 matches. Moreover, the bagel she served to the American is a Tour-leading 15th 6-0 set this year.
Previously, the 2020 Roland Garros champion Swiatek wasted only 54 minutes in her first-round victory over Ukraine’s Lesia Tsurenko. The most dominant WTA player right now is aiming for a sixth consecutive title.
The 2018 French Open winner Simona Halep lost to 19-year-old Zheng Qinwen of China 2-6 6-2 6-1 on Thursday. Roland Garros is Halep’s most successful major, with 32 matches she won in Paris, but this time she fell to a player who was competing at a Grand Slam only for the second time in her young career.
The world No.74 Zheng went from a break down early in the second set and won eight games in a row as Halep struggled with some sort of illness, having difficulty breathing.
