Less than a year after returning from maternity leave, world No.103 Tatjana Maria upset fifth seed Maria Sakkari in the third round of Wimbledon 6-3 7-5.
The fifth-seeded Sakkari converted just one of seven break points as she once again failed to progress past the third round of Wimbledon.
In the previous round, the unseeded Maria recovered from 3-0 down in the final set to beat Sorana Cirstea and register first Top 50 win in over two years. Today against Sakkari, Maria also battled back from 3-0 down, this time in the second set, and won five straight games from 2-5 to move into the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time.
The 34-year-old Maria is a mother of two. In December 2013 she gave birth to her first daughter Charlotte, while in April 2021 she gave birth to another girl, Cecilia.
Maria’s fourth-round opponent at Wimbledon will be Grand Slam champion Jelena Ostapenko, who fought past Irina-Camelia Begu 3-6 6-1 6-1 earlier on Friday.
I dont like her she is too in your face type of player with very little proof that she is a world class champion
