Serena Williams will continue her 2022 comeback at the August 8-14 National Bank Open in Toronto.
After making a long-awaiting return to tennis at Wimbledon, the 23-time Grand Slam champion has signed up to play the WTA 1000 tournament in Canada, as the Hologic WTA Tour returns to Toronto for the first time since 2019. Entering the event using her protected ranking, the currently unranked Williams will join the star-studded list that includes 41 of the world’s Top 43 WTA players, including the entire Top 30.
Playing her first singles match in a year, Williams lost a nail-biter against France’s Harmony Tan in the first round of Wimbledon. The tennis legend is now thrilling the fans by confirming the continuation of her comeback.
The 40-year-old Williams has won Toronto three times. In her last appearance there, in 2019, the American finished runner-up to Canada’s own Bianca Andreescu.
This is what she needs to do to better prepare for the US Open. Get some matches in…and not doubles.
