Legendary doubles team Serena and Venus Williams have received wildcards into the women’s doubles draw at the 2022 US Open, as the younger sister plays the last tournament in her illustrious career.
The Williams sisters have won 14 major doubles titles and three Olympic gold medals together. The first time they lifted a Grand Slam women’s doubles trophy together was at the 1999 French Open, while the last time they triumphed as a team at a major was at Wimbledon in 2016. They won the US Open doubles tournament together in 1999 and 2009.
The last time these two WTA legends, now in their 40s, teamed up was at the 2018 French Open, where they lost in the third round. Since Serena is transitioning away from tennis, she is once again joining forces with her sister to make the most of her last US Open. It will be an emotional farewell and the American probably wants to spend as much time she can on the court in New York.
In singles, Serena will play Montenegro’s Danka Kovinic in the first round, during the night session on Arthur Ashe Stadium on Monday. Venus will face Belgium’s Alison van Uytvanck in her singles opener on Tuesday.
