France’s Caroline Garcia produced a clinical display to beat American Coco Gauff 6-3 6-4 in the quarterfinals of the 2022 US Open.
The in-form Garcia immediately brought Gauff near the edge of a cliff and rarely looked back against a home star who had defeated her in both their previous meetings. The 17th-seeded Garcia quickly jumped to a 4-0 lead at the start and even though the 12th-seeded Gauff hit back in the next game, there was nothing that could change the pace of the first set.
Gauff dropped serve at the start of the second set and never recovered, as Garcia recorded her sixth straight victory over a Top 20 opponent. The Frenchwoman is through to her first Grand Slam semifinal, having dropped just 27 games on the way. Moreover, she’s won 18 of her past 19 matches.
For a place in the final, Garcia will face fifth Ons Jabeur, who defeated Ajla Tomljanovic during Tuesday’s day session.
