Though Taylor Townsend and Madison Keys ended the tie with a win in doubles, the American team will now play a Qualifying tie April 14-15 of next year. The U.S. will find out its opponent when the draw for nations in the Qualifying pool is done on Sunday in Glasgow, Scotland.
The Czech Republic’s semifinal opponent will be last year’s runner-up Switzerland, whose Belinda Bencic and Viktorija Golubic recorded singles victories over Canadians Leylah Fernandez and Bianca Andreescu on Friday. The Czech Republic has won six of the last ten Billie Jean King Cup titles.
In the other semifinal on Saturday, Australia will play against home team Great Britain. The championship tie is Sunday, November 13.
