You know that the best things happen when you least expect them. That’s exactly what happened to Ajla Tomljanovic when she secured her career-high WTA ranking while being on an injury layoff.

Ajla Tomljanovic of Australia

In January 2023, Australia’s Tomljanovic had to undergo a minor procedure on her knee and said that it would take her several months to fully recover. “Happy I did the necessary steps to get fully healthy,” Tomljanovic wrote on Twitter then. Even though she’s yet to play a match this tennis season, on Monday the 29-year-old returned to her career-high ranking of No.33, which she first reached in October 2022. Next week, she’s expected to rise to a new career-high of No.32.

Responding to a tweet mentioning her climbing up the rankings despite being away from the WTA Tour, Tomljanovic responded “It always happens when you stop caring about it” and added the face with tears of joy emoji. (via Tennis World USA, photo: Jimmie48)
