Former world No. 1 Garbine Muguruza is expecting her first child! The two-time Grand Slam champion shared the announcement with a series of charming polaroid snapshots, including one of herself in a one-piece swimsuit framed by palm trees and another in the arms of her husband, Arthur Borges.

Muguruza, who retired from professional tennis last year at the age of 30, got married to Borges in an intimate wedding ceremony in Spain on October 5, 2024. The couple’s story is straight out of a romance novel. They met by chance in 2021 during the US Open in New York’s Central Park. Borges, a businessman and model, spotted Muguruza while passing by, wished her luck, and the connection was instant. Their relationship became public later that year at the Akron WTA Finals in Guadalajara, when Borges affectionately celebrated Muguruza’s victory during the trophy ceremony.

The announcement quickly drew warm wishes from the tennis community. Current world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka wrote, “Congratulations. So happy for you.” Caroline Wozniacki, a mom of three, added, “Congratulations!! Sending you all the best on this new incredible chapter.” Dominika Cibulkova, a mother of two, shared a heartfelt and playful message: “WUUUUHUUUUUUUUUUUU!!! Here it comes!!!! Can’t wait for you to experience those sleepless nights, my love! Congratulations!”

Other tennis stars, including Elina Svitolina, Caroline Garcia, Lucie Safarova, Johanna Konta, and Angelique Kerber, also sent their congratulations, celebrating Muguruza as she embarks on this exciting new chapter of her life.

Following her retirement, Muguruza took on the exciting role of tournament director for the year-end WTA Finals.
