Defending champ Swiatek in tears after tough Wimbledon R1 win over Townsend

Iga Swiatek had never dropped a set in any of her previous five Grand Slam opening matches as the defending champion, but her Wimbledon title defense began with a stern examination, as she fought past Taylor Townsend 6-1 2-6 6-3 before breaking down in tears.

With nine double faults and a -11 winner-error differential, compared to her opponent’s two double faults and a slightly better -2 differential, Swiatek was pushed hard in her Wimbledon opener. She dominated the first set but lost control in the second, struggling to maintain her level as the match swung momentum.

The world No. 79 Townsend, backed in her player box by four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka and doubles partner Katerina Siniakova, repeatedly disrupted Swiatek and kept her under pressure. After two hours and two minutes, Swiatek ultimately survived the test but broke down in emotion after securing the win in her first career meeting with the American.

“It was tough couple of weeks, not a season where everything went how I wanted,” the third seed said in her post-match interview on Center Court. “I don’t think I won any three-set match this year, so I’m happy that I could do it here, because obviously it means a lot opening the court as defending champion.”

Swiatek has now reached the second round in all 27 of her Grand Slam appearances since the 2019 US Open, the longest such streak since Lindsay Davenport’s 27 between Wimbledon 1993 and the 2000 Australian Open.

The road to a second Wimbledon title is not getting any easier for the six-time major winner, who now faces 2021 finalist Karolina Pliskova. The Czech advanced with a 6-3 6-4 win over compatriot Tereza Valentova and arrives in strong form after reaching the Queen’s quarterfinals and Nottingham semifinals. Swiatek leads their head-to-head 3-0, though they have never met on grass.
