Eleven-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams has won her second ESPY Award, beating out world number one Dinara Safina and 2009 Roland Garros champion Svetlana Kuznetsova to receive the award.
Serena’s first ESPY award was for Best Female Athlete in 2003, and now she has won the Best Female Tennis Player Award.
Besides Serena, tennis stars Venus Williams and Bethanie Mattek-Sands graced the ceremony at the Nokia Theater L.A. where the winners of the 2009 ESPY Awards were announced.
The Williams sisters presented former South African president Nelson Mandela the Arthur Ashe Courage Award. Mandela’s daughter Zindzi Mandela and grandson Zondwa Mandela were at the Nokia Theatre to accept the award, which is presented annually to individuals whose contributions transcend sports.
The ESPYs, short for the Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly Awards, are US cable sports network ESPN’s annual player awards.
Im so happy that Serena won Best Tennis Player…cause lets face it she is the best! Also its great that they got 2 present the award 2 Nelson Mandela! Im sure every South African is just as proud as I am!
Aww, Maria would have won if she was nominated. Regardless of her performance. She did two years in a row. 😛
Why should Maria have won ? Why would she have even been nominated ? *roll-eyes*
She doesn’t deserve to be nominated this year in 2009. But if she was, I can bet you she’ll sweep every award that she’s nominated in, it happens every year, she has tons of fans worldwide, and the winner comes from online voting.
I’m tired of talking about Maria in articles that are completely irrelevant/not talking about her. Let’s stay focused on who the article is about. That said, this will just add more fuel to Serena’s “I’m the real #1” argument, which will drive me insane. But undoubtably, in the Grand Slams she’s been terrific.
Lily, don’t be hard on Teerin. Teerin is just a Maria fan, and is not intrusive. I have to defend my readers. 🙂
Serena is not only a great tennis player..and she definitely deserves this award, but she is also a very talented business women, is just two days she will be launching her new skin care product called mission skin! check it out at hsn.com.
