After winning her first career title last week at the WTA 250 claycourt tournament in Palermo, Italy, the world No.36 Collins won her tenth consecutive match in Sunday’s San Jose final to get her first WTA 500 champion’s trophy. The 27-year-old St. Petersburg, Fla., native and two-time NCAA singles champion at Virginia (2014, ’16) has gone 14-2 in singles since Wimbledon, making up for two months lost after undergoing surgery for endometriosis in April.

Prior to her runs at Palermo and San Jose, Collins was 0-6 in Tour-level semifinal matches. At the anniversary 50th edition of the Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic, the seventh-seeded Collins defeated Shelby Rogers in the first round, Sloane Stephens in the second, Elena Rybakina in the quarterfinals (15th Top 20 upset of her career), and then booked her place in the final with a 52-minute masterclass against qualifier Ana Konjuh, committing only nine unforced errors in her shortest match of the season.

With this latest triumph, Collins is expected to break back into the Top 30.

The US Open Series now continues in Canada with the National Bank Open ATP Masters 1000 in Toronto and WTA 1000 in Montreal. Four of the men’s Top 10 will play in Toronto, including Rafael Nadal, while six of the women’s Top 10 are in the Montreal draw, including 2019 US Open champion Bianca Andreescu and multiple-time Grand Slam champions Simona Halep, Garbine Muguruza, Petra Kvitova and Victoria Azarenka.
