Marketa Vondrousova will mark her Wimbledon title win by getting a matching strawberry tattoo with her coach Jan Hernych.

During the trophy ceremony at The Championships, Vondrousova revealed that she had made a bet with her coach that if she won the Grand Slam he would get a tattoo. The coach didn’t seem too excited about getting inked, but a deal is a deal. Then they decided to have matching “little strawberry” tattoos, paying homage to the classic Wimbledon dessert.

The initial plan was to get tattoos in London on Sunday, the day after the women’s singles final. Instead, they will do it in Prague at a later date. Vondrousova already has dozens of tattoos on her body, making her the most tattooed Wimbledon champion.

“I made a bet with my coach. He said that if I win a Grand Slam he’s going to get one also. So I think we’re going to go tomorrow,” Vondrousova said. The coach didn’t seem too pleased.

Playing in the Wimbledon final for the second year in a row, Jabeur stopped her opponent’s momentum by breaking back right at the start of the second set and progressing into a 3-1 lead. For the third time, Vondrousova erased a two-game deficit, leveling to 3-3. At 4-4, Vondrousova sneaked away with a break and confidently held serve to become a surprise champion at Wimbledon 2023. Jabeur admitted that this was the toughest loss in her career, which makes her record in Grand Slam finals 0-3.

With her husband, Stepan Simek, supporting her from the stands, Vondrousova defied all odds and emerged as a Grand Slam champion. Prior to the tournament, she was not considered a favorite by anyone. Ons Jabeur staged a comeback from a set and 4-2 deficit to beat Aryna Sabalenka 5-7(5) 6-4 6-3 and advance to the final of Wimbledon for the second consecutive year. The Tunisian’s semifinal victory means that Sabalenka has for the second consecutive Grand Slam failed to overtake Iga Swiatek at the top of the WTA rankings.

The gruelling 58-minute first set went with serve, as Jabeur couldn’t convert her three break points and Sabalenka one. Even though at times it was Jabeur who played much better, the sixth seed failed to capitalize on her opportunities and her second-seeded opponent edged the set in a tiebreak. The world No.2 Sabalenka converted her second set point when Jabeur responded to her strong serve with a forehand error.

With Sabalenka taking a break lead in the second set, it appeared that Jabeur was destined for disappointment. Even in the post-match interview she admitted that she accepted defeat at one point and saw herself going home. However, the Tunisian found inner strength and started displaying a determined look in her eyes. She impressively won four straight games from 4-2 down, effectively pushing the match into a decisive third set. Jabeur’s tenacity breathed new life into the contest, setting the stage for an exciting conclusion.

From 2-2 in the decider, Jabeur started dominating the contest. With Jabeur leading 5-2, Sabalenka saved the first match point with her ninth ace and the second one with another good serve. However, the reigning Australian Open champion couldn’t survive her opponent’s service game, as Jabeur served an ace to convert her fifth match point.

In the first women’s singles semifinal at this year’s Wimbledon, Vondrousova broke Svitolina’s serve three times in a row to take the first set. Building on her momentum, the Czech player swiftly established a commanding 4-0 lead in the second set, seemingly on her way to an easy victory. Nevertheless, Svitolina, a new mom on the tour, who had defeated four Grand Slam champions en route to the semifinal, had other plans.

Svitolina displayed remarkable resilience, winning three consecutive games to get the second set back on serve. Despite her efforts, the former world No.3 was unable to complete a full comeback, as Vondrousova regained her composure and secured another crucial break. As the 2023 season began, Vondrousova embarked on the new chapter of her tennis journey without the support of Nike. Months have passed, the Czech has even made it to the Wimbledon final four, yet, her tennis apparel remains unbranded.

Even though her Wimbledon outfit is not signed officially, I can make a guess what she’s wearing — Lululemon. In particular their bestseller Align™ Waist-Length Racerback Tank Top and Mesh Pleats Mid-Rise Mini Tennis Skirt. In a repeat of last year’s Wimbledon final, Ons Jabeur rallied from a set down to eliminate defending champion Elena Rybakina in the quarterfinals of The Championships, 6-7(5) 6-4 6-1.

The sixth-seeded Jabeur recovered from 1-3 to 3-3 at the start of the match and held a set point serving at 6-5, but Rybakina broke back right away and edged the first set in a tiebreak. The Kazakhstani has won a Tour-leading 12 tiebreak sets this year.

From 4-4 in the second set, Jabeur won five games in a row to force a deciding set and establish a commanding 3-0 lead in it. The Tunisian dropped just one more game in the remainder of the match, as Rybakina never recovered, lost her serve once more and fell on the first match point.

At Wimbledon 2022, Jabeur became the first Arab player to reach a Grand Slam final. Her semifinal opponent this time around will be second seed Aryna Sabalenka, who will be playing not only for her first Wimbledon final but also for the No.1 WTA ranking. Aryna Sabalenka defeated Madison Keys 6-2 6-4 in the quarterfinals of Wimbledon and is now just one match win away from overtaking Iga Swiatek at the top of the WTA rankings.

Facing the player who entered the quarterfinals undefeated on grass this year (9-0), the second-seeded Sabalenka cruised through the first set with breaks in the first and fifth games. In the second set, the reigning Australian Open champion found herself 4-2 down, but then took control by winning four straight games to reach her fourth straight semifinal at a major. In 2021, Sabalenka played Wimbledon semifinals.

For the second consecutive Slam, Sabalenka has a chance to overtake Swiatek at No.1. The Belarusian will need to win her upcoming semifinal which she will contest against Ons Jabeur, who eliminated defending champion Elena Rybakina.

The semifinal pair in the top half of the women’s singles draw was determined yesterday: wildcard Elina Svitolina vs. Marketa Vondrousova.
