Caroline WozniackiDanish teenager Caroline Wozniacki added fourth seed Elena Dementieva to the list of top players who exited the tournament too early, which already includes Dinara Safina, Vera Zvonareva, Ana Ivanovic and Jelena Jankovic.

While the four women lost in the third round or earlier, Dementieva was a bit better,  falling to the WTA Tour’s newcomer of the year 2008 7-5 6-4 in the fourth round.

The 18-year-old Dane, ranked 12th in the world, came back from a break down in both sets to reach her sixth quarterfinal of the season.

Wozniacki’s next opponent will be world No.8 Svetlana Kuznetsova, who comfortably won her match against fellow Russian Alisa Kleybanova 6-2 6-1. (source: Reuters, photo: Ralf Reinecke)

  1. I like how you called Caroline the award she just one. I was watching a match on TV (when they actually showed a match) between Caroline and Ana. The commentators started calling her Caroline “The Kid” Wozniacki.

  2. Hehe. Ok, she’s a young budding tennis star, I wouldn’t be too hard on the commentators, I suppose they meant nothing wrong by calling her Caroline “The Kid” Wozniacki. However, looking at her age, being a 18-year-old, she would already come of age in my country, and many others, and is not a kid any more.

  3. For all the players that I like I usually try to give them nickname of sorts. They saved me the trouble of coming up of one for her.

  4. Is nice to see Caroline making on court news, and pretty good ones too. The off court was getting distracting: Verdasco, the tattoo, the scantly dresses off court, and on court (which even in the photos you could see her red underwear, Indian Wells third round).

I heard American commentators calling Wozniacki “The Kid” last year when she was 17. As I understand in the U.S. you call someone a “kid” if they are young looking no matter the age.

Ms. Marija, Wozniacki is 18, old enough to get married 🙂

  5. I think they called Wozniacki “the kid” just because you are still considered a ‘kid’ in the States until you are 21!! If she was in Ireland she definitely wouldn’t be a kid anymore!

  6. I believe they called her “the kid” because she belongs to the younger part of the WTA Tour, she’s still on the rise.

  7. I THINK THAT IT WAS DEMENTIEVA WHO LOST THE MATCH AND NOT CAROLINE WHO WON IT…DEMENTIEVA WAS ATTACKING DURING THE WHOLE MATCH AND CAROLINE WAS JUST WAITING FOR HER MISTAKES. DON’T LIKE SUCH KIND OF PLAY BUT CAROLINE HAS WON AND WHO CARES HOW SHE DID IT.
BUT I’M SURE THAT KUZNETSOVA WILL UPSET WOZNIACKI IN THE NEXT ROUND

  8. Mr. Daniel , although I did not see the Wozniacki/Dememtieva match, that is the style that Wozniacki plays, she waits for her opponent to make mistakes. I don’t like this style of play. She doesn’t “paint the lines” with her shots nor she tries to hit the corners. It looks to me that she returns the ball where her opponent is. I saw the match statistics and Dementieva had 45 unforced errors and 28 winners, if Dementieva would have made half the unforce errors she might have won the match.
