The second-round action was finished today at the Guangzhou Open and Bojana Jovanovski, last weekend’s Tashkent Open champion who eliminated top seed Sorana Cirstea in the first round, fell to American qualifier Vania King, ranked 124th, 6-4 0-6 6-4 in one hour and 54 minutes. Seed No.2 Alize Cornet and No.3 Laura Robson moved into the quarterfinals after defeating Karolina Pliskova of Czech Republic 7-6(4) 6-0 and Zheng Saisai of China 6-3 7-6(4) respectively. The next opponent of Alize Cornet will be Yvonne Meusburger, while Robson will play another Zheng, this time Zheng Jie.
One more seed made it into the quarterfinals – eighth seed Monica Puig of Puerto Rico won over Galina Voskoboeva of Kazakhstan in straight sets 6-3 6-2. Two seeded players lost in today’s second-round action: Johanna Konta of Great Britain, ranked 141st, stunned the forth-seeded Peng Shuai in just one hour and 8 minutes, 6-1 6-3, and Zhang Shuai of China upset the sixth-seeded Hsieh Su-Wei of Chinese Taipei, 6-2 6-2.
