Ana Ivanovic played one of her best Grand Slam matches and dispatched home darling Samantha Stosur 6-7(8) 6-4 6-2. The Serb fought off many set points before the first-set tiebreak and earned three set points of her own, but the opener was not to be over soon and at 7-7 in the tiebreak Ivanovic netted a forehand and the rain started to pour! Unbelievable.
When play resumed, Stosur finished the set to her advantage, however, she didn’t take the momentum to the second set and Ivanovic broke for a 3-2 lead and kept it until the end of the set, not allowing Sam a single break point.
Unlike her opponent, Ivanovic transferred the momentum to the decider, broke Stosur in the fifth and seventh games to celebrate the entry into the fourth round after a thrilling match. Ivanovic hit 46 winners to Stosur’s 21 (32 forehand winners to Stosur’s 11).
Ivanovic’s fourth-round opponent will be world No.1 Serena Williams, who sent home Daniela Hantuchova earlier on Rod Laver Arena. It’s not good news for Ana, who has never even won a set against Serena in their four meetings.
Maybe Stosur is out, but Australians have Casey Dellacqua in the victorious headlines. The mom of little Blake ousted Zheng Jie 6-2 6-4 in round three and repeated her best result at the Australian Open, which came in 2008.
Li Na hit just 17 winners to 50 unforced errors and equalled her opponent Lucie Safarova in the number of points won (99) but still managed to advance to the fourth round with a 1-6 7-6(2) 6-3 victory, although not before saving a match point in the second set. On that match point Li even thought she was beaten, but it turned out that Safarova’s backhand down the line was just a bit long. (photo: sr_cranks)
