I did say I was expecting an all-Williams final at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, although I did give in the back of my mind a slight chance of an upset in both the semis, but for Alize Cornet to take out Serena Williams in straight sets and after facing just one break point, I would never have thought that! 6-4 6-4 was in no way a scoreline expected for a defeat of Serena. Moreover, the 26th-ranked Cornet scored her first victory over a No.1 player, by serving out the match at love!

In the first semifinal on Friday, Venus Williams was constantly in the lead in both sets, and even though Caroline Wozniacki was catching up occasionally, it was far from enough for her not to fall to the American, 6-3 6-2 . Venus is now on an 14-match winning streak in Dubai, the tournament she won the last two times she played. Moreover, she’s now extended her head-to-head record against Wozniacki to 5-0.
