Klara Zakopalova

Klara Zakopalova had not won a WTA title since claiming two in 2005 (‘s-Hertogenbosch and Portoroz), losing six finals from then on. The triumphs were so long ago that I’m sure most of you don’t even remember that at the time her last name was Koukalova (she married Czech soccer player Jan Zakopal on June 6, 2006).

Today in the final of the Brasil Tennis Cup the unlucky history almost repeated itself, as the 32nd-ranked Czech was behind her opponent and second seed Garbine Muguruza 4-6 2-5! Amazingly, the third-seeded Zakopalova ran off with eleven straight games, even bageling the Spaniard in the deciding set, to win the tournament in Florianopolis 4-6 7-5 6-0. (photo: Jimmie48)

  1. Marja, doesn’t Klara remind you of Patty Schnyder? Every time I see her play, I always think of Patty. Maybe that’s just me 🙂

Anyway, congrats to her for winning this title. I might be mistaken but I think she had lost a final the previous week.

    Cheers,
    Ashley

  2. AfricanTennisnow, to be honest, I didn’t get reminded of Patty. 🙂 You’re right, Klara was in the Rio Open final the previous week. 😉
