Endlessly sad news! Former British No.1 Elena Baltacha retired from tennis in November 2013, a month later she married her coach Nino Severino, in January 2014 she was diagnosed with liver cancer, in March she announced it to the world and on Sunday, May 4th, she died at the age of 30. How tragic and unexpected!

Baltacha’s husband expressed his pain in a statement:

We are heartbroken beyond words at the loss of our beautiful, talented and determined Bally. She was an amazing person and she touched so many people with her inspirational spirit, her warmth and her kindness.

When she was 19, Baltacha was diagnozed with primary sclerosing cholangitis, a chronic liver condition which she coped with throughout her career with medication.

Here’s a nice interview with Bally during the 2012 Australian Open:

RIP Bally.
