Serena Williams

No surprise, Serena Williams defended her 2014 Internazionali BNL d’Italia title with a straight-set victory over Sara Errani in the finals.

The tenth-seeded Errani didn’t allow to be absolutely dismantled: in the first set she earned break points in multiple games, and even converted one to approach the world No.1 Serena from 2-4 to 3-4, but then dropped serve right afterwards and the downward spiral began – Williams won all the subsequent games of the match to triumph 6-3 6-0.

Maybe the result would’ve been more close had Errani not been troubled by a leg injury, but we know how powerful Serena is, she can always step up. Errani is now 0-7 lifetime against Williams, and after today’s match she was crying into her towel.

Still, we saw more resistance from Errani then in her previous meeting with Williams, which was also on clay, in the semis of the 2013 French Open, when she lost 6-0 6-1.

Despite the defeat in the final, Errani had a fantastic week in Rome, scoring big wins over Li Na in the quarterfinals and Jelena Jankovic in the semifinals, plus, she’ll now take the court again, to fight for the doubles crown with her partner Roberta Vinci.
