Errani battles past Jankovic into Roland Garros quarterfinals

Sara Errani

Tenth seed Sara Errani scraped through the first set against sixth-seeded Jelena Jankovic and then comfortably marched through the rest of the match, hitting just two unforced errors in the second set.

After a tightly-contested first set, which lasted 81 minutes and included eight breaks of serve, Errani raced to a 3-0 lead in the second set, with two breaks of serve advantage. JJ then scored a break of her own and finally held serve to approach Errani to 2-3, but from that small JJ’s revival all the subsequent games went to Errani and the 2012 French Open runner-up recorded a 7-6(5) 6-2 victory for a place in the quarterfinals.

Errani’s next opponent will be seed No.28 Andrea Petkovic, who earlier beat Kiki Bertens 1-6 6-2 7-5 in the fourth round. Also advancing today was fourth-seeded Simona Halep, with a 6-4 6-3 win over seed No.15 Sloane Stephens. There is just one more fourth-round clash left – Svetlana Kuznetsova vs. Lucie Safarova – and the winner will face Halep in the quarters. (photo: Jimmie48)
