Agnieszka Radwanska

Agnieszka Radwanska headlined the draw of the 2014 AEGON International, but just as many times before, the Pole fell in the first round, this time to Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-4 3-6 7-6(4).

After winning the tournament in 2008, the fourth-ranked Radwanska has lost in the first round four times. Her last further progress were the quarterfinals in 2011. Nevertheless, the first steps on grass never determined Radwanska’s fate at Wimbledon, as in 2012 and 2013 after her opening-round losses at Eastbourne, she reached the final and the semifinals of Wimbledon, respectively.

The first match (on grass) is always tricky. Well, it was a great match before Wimbledon to get used to it. It was a really good match, actually.

The top-seeded Radwanska is apparently not in despair over the loss. Maybe she considers it a lucky charm for Wimbledon. (source: ESPN, photo: Jimmie48)

  1. Two fantastic matches at Eastbourne yesterday! Radwanska v Pavlyuchenkova was great fun and despite losing, I thought Aga played a really good match. Pavs was on fire and hit the ball beautifully for much of the match and also matched Radwanska’s variety with some great drop shots. Kerber v Riske was also a really super match.
