Local hero CiCI Bellis made a proper start into her 2017 Bank of the West Classic campaign, winning her first round match against Alize Cornet from France in straight sets.
The 18-year-old American, who has recently cracked the Top 50 after turning pro less than a year ago, is truly a hometown hero in Stanford, living in the neighboring town of Atherton, just a few minutes drive from the tournament site.
The tournament will kick into higher gear on Wednesday as Maria Sharapova is due to play her second-round match against Lesia Tsurenko, followed by the first match of top seed Garbine Muguruza in the evening.
