After ending her six-year title drought at the Kremlin Cup in Moscow, Julia Goerges punched a last-minute qualifying ticket for the Hengqin Life WTA Elite Trophy Zhuhai, where she continued the excellent form, racing through the tournament without dropping a set and lifting her second champion’s trophy in two weeks. The German’s victim in the final was American Coco Vandeweghe, 7-5 6-1.

The second-seeded Vandeweghe earned a 5-2 lead in the first set, even though only 36% of her first serves got in, but then as she failed to serve it out at 5-3, she got furious, tossed her racquet and the seventh-seeded Goerges reeled off 11 of the last 12 games for her ninth consecutive match win.

Sporting the Asics Fall Athlete Dress, Goerges eliminated Magdalena Rybarikova, Kristina Mladenovic, Anastasija Sevastova and Coco Vandeweghe this season-ending week in Zhuhai, dropping serve only three times in these straight-set triumphs!

The title will lift the German No.1, who celebrated her 29th birthday on Thursday, to a career-high ranking of No.14, while Vandeweghe will make her Top 10 debut.

  1. I love Julia. She’s one of my favorite players even when she was not playing well. I know we can see her as a Top 10 player soon. Her forehand was amazing all through out the tournament and others don’t have an answer to it. Coco on the other hand had a terrific season too especially on Grand Slams. I wish her success too.
