On Wednesday at the Sydney International, Daria Gavrilova earned a 2-in-1 win over Samantha Stosur, as a 6-4 6-2 second-round victory over her fellow Australian is taking her to the semifinals because Garbine Muguruza pulled out of the tournament due to a thigh injury just hours after reaching the quarterfinals with a victory over Kiki Bertens. The top-seeded Muguruza has now withdrawn with a health problem from her second consecutive tournament at the start of 2018.
Italian qualifier Camila Giorgi recorded her second successive win over a Grand Slam champion, following up her first-round victory over US Open winner Sloane Stephens with a second-round victory over two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova. Giorgi’s quarterfinal obstacle will be last year’s runner-up Agnieszka Radwanska, who exacted revenge on her opponent for the second straight match, following up her win over the 2017 champion Johanna Konta with a win over Catherine Bellis, a player that ousted her from the Dubai tournament last year to earn her first Top 10 triumph. Our photographer Jimmie48 covered all these matches in photos! Enjoy!
