The 2018 Australian Open final in women’s singles was an epic battle between Caroline Wozniacki and Simona Halep, who both saved match points en route to the championship match in which they played for their first Grand Slam title and the No.1 ranking. Six years after last being on top of the WTA rankings, Wozniacki finally won her first major and ensured a return to the No.1 position, while Halep, who after the tournament spent four hours in the hospital because of dehydration, left us all certain that a Grand Slam title will be added to her biography sooner rather than later.
Let’s see how WTA players commented on the spectacular final and Wozniacki’s triumph. Everyone is proud of women’s tennis at this moment!
Caro’s best friend Serena Williams, who eventually wasn’t ready to come to Melbourne and defend her title, couldn’t sleep because of excitement.
The 2018 Australian Open doubles champion Kristina Mladenovic, whose famous Adidas jumpsuit was given to Caro, as I explained in my Melbourne fashion overview, also sent a nice public message to her colleague.
Casey Dellacqua, Petra Kvitova, Bethanie Mattek-Sands, Heather Watson, Marion Bartoli and many others also took to Twitter to celebrate this great moment in women’s tennis and the triumph of Wozniacki’s hard work, belief in herself and perseverance.
Enjoy your moment, Caro! I’m inspired by the fact that you stayed so strong and fought off all the criticism about being a slamless No.1. Also, you were so gracious in the moments of heartbreaking love betrayal you faced, while now your love life is blossoming again with your fiancé David Lee. You are a powerful woman!
I am just so happy for Caro! She really deserves it. It was an epic final. It was so close. Both girls really put their hearts on it.
