After midnight, Russian Maria Sharapova victoriously finished her second-round match against Sorana Cirstea, the last Romanian left standing in the draw, and extended her perfect record at US Open night sessions to 21-0.

After straightforwardly winning the first set, the 22nd-seeded Sharapova had her serve broken early in the second set. Trailing 4-2, Sharapova started building her comeback and prevented the match from going even deeper into the night, even though the world No.51 Cirstea was just two points from taking the match to the third set, after again breaking Sharapova in the ninth game, to lead 5-4. Eventually, Sharapova punched her ticket for the third round with a 6-2 7-5 victory in one hour and 50 minutes.

Sharapova’s next opponent will be fellow French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia, seeded tenth, who fought back to beat American Taylor Townsend 4-6 6-3 6-4.
