Monday was a super busy day at the Rogers Cup in Toronto with 13 first-round singles matches on the schedule.
Playing her first match since retiring in the first round of Wimbledon because of a wrist injury, Maria Sharapova is still finding her form and confidence, as the Russian lost to seed No.16 Anett Kontaveit despite leading by a set and a break, 4-6 6-3 6-4.
Daria Kasatkina was bageled in the first set, but eventually made an upset on the first day of the Premier 5 tournament by taking out seed No.12 Angelique Kerber 0-6 6-2 6-4 to pocket her first Top 15 win of the season.
Not too much of a surprise, but still technically an upset was Dayana Yastremska‘s 6-3 6-2 victory over 13th-seeded Johanna Konta. Making her first appearance in Toronto since the spectacular title run in 2015, seed No.11 Belinda Bencic eased past an erratic Anastasia Potapova 6-2 6-1.
Jelena Ostapenko, 15th seed Caroline Wozniacki, Julia Goerges, Elise Mertens and Jennifer Brady all advanced to the second round.
We also have practice photos of Naomi Osaka (how awesome is the former world No.1’s black Nike Pro cropped training top!), Karolina Pliskova and Donna Vekic, who seems to be the favorite practice partner on the WTA tour.
Tuesday’s Toronto schedule features world number one Ashleigh Barty taking on American Sofia Kenin and an all-Canadian clash between Eugenie Bouchard and Bianca Andreescu.
