Adidas releases Prime Blue tennis collection, puts plastic waste to good use

Just as I thought that we won’t hear from Adidas until the coronavirus crisis completely goes away, I’m getting a surprise in my inbox — a promo image of Garbine Muguruza in the brand’s new Prime Blue collection.

The new performance clothes continue to enforce Adidas’ dedication to ecology, as they are all made from recycled waste intercepted from beaches and coastal communities.

The generous use of black mesh in the new Adidas Prime Blue Dress resembles Muguruza’s dress from the Escouade collection launched at last year’s Roland Garros. The contrasting Y-back is also not a novelty in Adidas’ designs, as we’ve most recently had it in the 2020 Australian Open HEAT.RDY collection. The mesh in the new dress features a camo pattern and that is again something Adidas had already incorporated in their items — in Stella McCartney’s collection for Wimbledon 2019.

What makes the 3-in-1 Adidas Prime Blue Dress stand out from its predecessors is the fact that the mesh top is a separate piece, so the dress can be worn with short sleeves or as a tank.

As far as I can recall, this is the first time that we’re seeing a dramatic V cutout on the back of an Adidas design. This Adidas Prime Blue Camo Tank also includes a printed elastic strap that connects the tank at shoulder blades. The fabric is textured. Besides this grey/orange version, the tank also exists in light blue with white, and in dash grey with black accents.

The tank is intended to be paired with the Adidas Prime Blue Pleat Skirt that has a pleated hem and built-in shortie.

Another skirt style in the new collection is the Adidas Prime Blue Camo Skirt.

The Adidas Women’s Prime Blue City Jacket rounds out the collection. Just like the dress, the jacket features mesh overlays, complemented by ribbing at the collar, hem and sleeve cuffs. There are also functional zippered side pockets, while the “A” patch at left chest can be removed.

This new sustainable collection is currently discounted 30% at Tennis Warehouse USA.
