The first WTA player to win a match at the inaugural Mutua Madrid Open Virtual Pro was Belinda Bencic, as the Swiss worked a PS4 controller better than Carla Suarez Navarro, defeating the Spaniard 3-1 on Monday afternoon.

Without live tennis due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Madrid tournament organized the first ever online tennis competition with real ATP and WTA players taking part. Watching the virtual match, we could see Bencic and Suarez Navarro via webcams in the corners of the screen, while there was also live commentary on their court action.

What surprised me a bit is that matches are very short. Bencic recorded her 3-1 victory in 9 minutes.

Have a look at Bencic’s grand entrance to her first ever at-home tennis match watched by thousands of people:

Each draw features 16 players, divided into four groups. Two most successful players from each group will advance to the quarterfinals.

You can watch the tournament’s live stream at Mutua Madrid Open’s Facebook page. Tune in right away for more tennis matches! All 16 WTA players are scheduled to play at least one match today.
