The 2017 Prague Open runner-up Kristyna Pliskova scored her third Top 20 win of the season by defeating second seed Petra Martic 6-1 7-5 in the second round to produce the biggest upset of the week so far. The 69th-ranked Pliskova, who is playing the Prague Open for the fifth time, never dropped serve in today’s encounter with the Croat.

Third seed Elise Mertens battled past Camila Giorgi 6-4 6-2 to make the quarterfinals. The first set featured 16 deuces, while the second set was a smoother ride for the Belgian.

Ana Bogdan was supposed to play two matches on Wednesday, but she left the tournament site without breaking a sweat. Her second-round singles opponent Lesia Tsurenko withdrew due to a rib injury, while her doubles partner Patricia Tig also had to withdraw.

In first-round action on Wednesday, we had two three-setters: Laura Siegemund‘s victory over qualifier Mayar Sherif and Tamara Zidansek‘s win over Katerina Siniakova.

The doubles pairing of Barbora Strycova and Simona Halep attracted a lot of attention, even though they were edged by Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Veronika Kudermetova in the first round. After the loss, Strycova made a funny comment on Instagram:

About the positive part of today: winning more games in a match alongside Simo than I have ever won against her in all of my matches altogether.
