Kim Clijsters and her team have arrived in New York full of excitement, but the Belgian’s resumption of the 2020 season has been postponed because of an abdominal injury that has forced her to withdraw from the Western & Southern Open. Good news is that the Hall of Famer is optimistic that she’ll be ready for the US Open which starts on August 31st.
“I have great memories from playing in Cincinnati and was looking forward to being a part of the event this year,” said Clijsters, who was awarded a wildcard for the New York edition of the Western & Southern Open. “It’s disappointing to have to withdraw, but after discussions with medical and my team, I need a little more recovery time.”
The 37-year-old Clijsters, currently unranked, has received wildcard invitations for both singles and doubles at the 2020 US Open. Since her latest comeback, the three-time US Open champion has played just two tournaments and her appearance at the upcoming Grand Slam will be her first at that big stage in eight years.
