Bianca Andreescu gets emotional playing first match in over a year

After 15 months away from competitive tennis, Bianca Andreescu came through a tough Australian Open first-round match against Mihaela Buzarnescu and it felt “pretty damn good”.

Contesting her first Grand Slam tournament since miraculously lifting the 2019 US Open champion’s trophy, Andreescu looks like she hasn’t really been away, even though a day before her comeback she felt super nervous. The 20-year-old showed all her power, competitive spirit, movement and skills in a 6-2 4-6 6-3 win over Buzarnescu.

The night before the match, Andreescu cried, just thinking about the hard 15 months behind her that involved the COVID-19 ruining her plans, her knee injury and personal issues.

The victory carries even more weight when you take into account that Andreescu was among 72 players in 14-day hard quarantine. She definitely doesn’t regret opting out of last week’s Grampians Trophy.

Just as all NikeCourt athletes, Andreescu looked stunning in the brand’s new collection. The Canadian chose purple separates: the Nike Spring Slam Melbourne Tank and Nike Spring Melbourne Skirt.

  1. Its great to have her back. Personality wise she is defs the next Serena. We are sitting on a gold mine is Bianca, Naomi, Ash , Iga and Sophia (Hopefully along with Amanda and Coco) can become a super consistent top group like we had in the late 90s early 2000s.

  2. Andy, Bianca is one of a kind in how mentally strong she is. I was thinking that her meditation sessions and that philosophical approach she has in her life have played a major role in her mental stability.

We do have many young players with amazing careers. What is special in this era is that a great number of old players are also still around and super successful.
