Serena Williams has withdrawn from the Miami Open following a recent oral surgery.
The world No.7 Williams hasn’t given us details about the surgery, but we know she had been complaining about tooth pain on Instagram a few days ago, as Ben Rothenberg pointed out on Twitter. The news comes after the sport’s biggest male stars Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer had already withdrawn from the tournament.
The Miami Open has always been special for Williams, not only because she’s won it a record eight times, the last time in 2015, but also because it’s her home tournament, as she lives in nearby Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.
The last match Williams played was a semifinal loss to Naomi Osaka at the 2021 Australian Open. The Miami Open starts on Tuesday, March 23. (photo: Jimmie48)
