Serena Williams pulls out of US Open due to injury

Serena Williams will not play the 2021 US Open. The American announced the unwelcome news on Instagram, citing a torn hamstring as the reason for her withdrawal.

After careful consideration and following the advice of my doctors and medical team, I have decided to withdraw from the US Open to allow my body to heal completely from a torn hamstring. New York is one of the most exciting cities in the world and one of my favorite places to play — I’ll miss seeing the fans but will be cheering everyone on from afar.

The record-equalling 24th Grand Slam title is further and further from Williams. Her last triumph at a major was at the 2017 Australian Open. Since then, she’s played four major finals, but lost all in straight sets.

Williams, currently ranked No.22, hasn’t played since late June, when she retired in the first round of Wimbledon after slipping on the grass. (photo: Jimmie48)
