Maria Sharapova and her fiancé Alexander Gilkes have become parents to a baby boy named Theodore.

The retired tennis star gave birth two weeks before announcing the news on Instagram. The five-time Grand Slam champion welcomed her first child on July 1st, 2022. Her son’s name, Theodore, is of Greek origin and means “the gift of God”.

After giving herself some time to get accustomed to the role of being a mother, Sharapova shared the news with the world by posting a family photo on Friday and saying: “The most beautiful, challenging, and rewarding gift our little family could ask for.”

The former WTA world No.1 announced pregnancy on her 35th birthday, April 19th, as she posted a beach photo which revealed her baby bump.

Sharapova and Gilkes started dating publicly in early 2018. When they announced engagement in December 2020, Sharapova said: “I said yes from the first day we met. This was our little secret, wasn’t it.” Her fiancé shared his emotions on social media: “Thank you for making me a very very happy boy. I look forward to a lifetime of loving you, and learning from you.”
