The 2024 Australian Open is approaching, but unfortunately, it won’t feature world No.13 Madison Keys. In a social media post, the American athlete announced her withdrawal from the tournament due to a lingering shoulder injury.

In her announcement, Keys conveyed her struggles with a shoulder injury that have prompted her medical team to advise against participating in the prestigious tournament. The two-time Australian Open semifinalist posted on social media:

Unfortunately I’ve been struggling with a shoulder injury and have been advised by my medical staff to withdraw from the Australian Open this year. This obviously isn’t the best news to start the tennis season, but I also know I’m making the right choice for my body.

Keys is one of three Top 20 female players who have pulled out of the Australian Open. World No.9 Karolina Muchova will not be able to compete because of a recurring wrist injury, while world No.17 Petra Kvitova is pregnant.

The first Grand Slam of the 2024 tennis season starts on January 14.
