It’s over with Saudi Arabia: WTA Finals move to America

0

The 2026 WTA Finals were originally set to mark the third and final year of the tournament’s stay in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. However, due to the ongoing war and political instability in the Middle East, the season-ending championship has been relocated to the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Indian Wells, California, where it will take place November 8–15.

When the WTA announced Riyadh as the host of the WTA Finals for the 2024–2026 cycle, the decision drew widespread criticism over Saudi Arabia’s human rights record and restrictions on women’s rights. Despite the initial backlash, the controversy gradually subsided as the tournament became part of Saudi Arabia’s broader investment in tennis, with the stated goal of inspiring one million people across the country to take up the sport by 2030.

This year, however, circumstances beyond the sport forced the WTA to urgently seek an alternative venue. With the security situation in the region remaining uncertain, the tour opted to move its flagship event to the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, home of the award-winning BNP Paribas Open and one of the most iconic venues in professional tennis.

In a statement announcing the change, the WTA thanked its partners in California:

“The organization is grateful to its partners at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden for their flexibility, collaboration and willingness to come together quickly to ensure a successful 2026 WTA Finals.”

Tickets will be on sale to the general public on Thursday, July 2 at wtafinals.com.
