Playing in the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time, 21-year-old Alexandra Eala produced a sensational display to eliminate defending champion Iga Swiatek 7-6(9) 6-2 at Wimbledon, becoming the first Filipina to reach the second week of a major.
“Maybe for someone like Iga who has won so many slams … or maybe someone like Serena or Venus this achievement may seem small, but for someone who grew up in the Philippines. … for her this is everything.”

The world No. 32 opened this year’s grass-court swing by capturing the WTA 125 title in Birmingham and arrived at Wimbledon as the first Filipino player to be seeded at a Grand Slam. Wearing the Nike Summer London Slam Dress, she more than lived up to the expectations, becoming the first WTA player from the Philippines to reach the fourth round of a major.
The opening set was a gripping battle that lasted one hour and 25 minutes. After the players traded breaks twice, the set was decided in a dramatic tiebreak, where Eala held her nerve and saved two set points to edge it 11-9. Riding that momentum, she stormed to a 4-0 lead in the second set. Although the third-seeded Swiatek recovered one break, Eala never lost control, sealing the biggest win of her career on her third match point.

The magnitude of the moment was clear during Eala’s on-court interview. Overcome with emotion, for a moment she couldn’t hold back tears as the Center Court crowd celebrated her remarkable achievement.
This was not the first time Eala had defeated the former world No. 1 Swiatek. She also stunned the six-time Grand Slam champion in their first meeting at the 2025 Miami Open.
With the victory, Eala now owns seven career wins over Top 10 opponents and continues to establish herself as one of the brightest young stars in women’s tennis.
