World No.29 Sorana Cirstea was the top seed at this week’s $250,000 Baku Cup, but after defeating wildcard Ons Jabeur in the opener, the Romanian got brushed aside in the second round by world No. 72 Stefanie Voegele of Switzerland, 6-1 6-1. It was a match that lasted just 49 minutes and Cirstea saved zero of six break points.
Last year was Cirstea’s best year and it reflected on her ranking as she reached her highest-ever No.21, but this season she made only two quarterfinals and due to a shoulder injury Baku was only her second tournament in two months.
When it comes to fashion, Cirstea’s appearance in Azerbaijan was a success – she was sporting the black and sparkly items from the new Adidas collection, that we will also see Ana Ivanovic wear at the 2014 US Open.
The tournament’s defending champion and second seed Elina Svitolina advanced to the quarterfinals, beating Silvia Soler-Espinosa 7-5 6-2. The only other seed that survived until the quarterfinal stage is fifth seed Bojana Jovanovski.
