On November 30th, Daria Gavrilova announced on Twitter that she has officially become an Australian citizen. Congrats, mate!
The Russian-born tennis star, currently ranked No.36, will give a big boost to Australian tennis, becoming the second-ranked player from her new country, behind Grand Slam champion Sam Stosur, who is now ranked No.27 in the world.
It’s interesting that the 21-year-old Gavrilova had already played ITF events, including Grand Slams, as an Australian for quite some time, while now she will represent Australia at all events, although the WTA is yet to update her profile page. The Moscow-born Melbourne resident will open her 2016 season at the Hopman Cup in Perth, partnering with Nick Kyrgios as part of the Australia Green team. (photo: Jimmie48)
I’m really curious though if she’ll be qualified to play at the Olympics next year. She’ll definitely be a big boost for Australia. I’m also waiting for Alja’s citizenship news.
Emman Damian, Ajla should get full citizenship soon. I read somewhere that it should be in January, but we’ll see.
Btw, I read somewhere that Alja is dating Nick Kyrgios. They are both playing in IPTL now but on a different team. Alja on Philippine Mavericks and Nick for Singapore Slammers.
Emman Damian, I read that as well, but I think I also read that Ajla said that they are just friends. We need some more time to pass for the truth to come out.
