Leylah Fernandez clinches third singles title in Hong Kong

World No.60 Leylah Fernandez of Canada rallied from a set down to beat Czech Republic’s Katerina Siniakova 3-6 6-4 6-4 in the final of the Prudential Hong Kong Tennis Open and clinch her third career singles title.

    Leylah Fernandez

Making her debut appearance at Hong Kong, Fernandez defeated Victoria Azarenka, Mirra Andreeva, Linda Fruhvirtova, Anna Blinkova, and lastly Siniakova, whom she had also beaten in their only previous meeting at the 2022 French Open.

In Sunday’s Hong Kong final, Fernandez twice dropped serve as Siniakova secured the first set. The 2021 US Open runner-up rebounded in the second set, establishing a commanding 4-0 lead. While she did experience a single service loss, Fernandez prevented Siniakova’s complete comeback by saving six break points in a long eighth game and holding serve for 5-3, eventually clinching the set on her first set point.

In the third set, Siniakova staged two comebacks from a break down. First, she rallied from a 1-3 deficit to level the score at 3-3. Later, she exhibited her determination once more by recovering from a 3-4 disadvantage to even the set at 4-4. However, Fernandez converted her third break point in the ninth game of the set to once again go up and this time she consolidated the lead to win the final match of the WTA 250 tournament.

Fernandez’ winning equipment: Lululemon V-Waist Cropped Tennis Tank Top and V-Waist Mid-Rise Tennis Skirt, the Puma Stewie 2 women’s basketball shoe, and Babolat Pure Aero 2023 tennis racquet.

    Top 20 rankings overview

Winning her third Roland Garros, Iga Swiatek is extending her stay atop the WTA rankings for the 63rd consecutive week. She is 928 points ahead of second-ranked Aryna Sabalenka, who had a chance to dethrone her from the No.1 spot, but lost in the French Open semifinals while she had to go one match further than the Pole in Paris.

Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan took over the No.3 position from American Jessica Pegula, who will remember the 2023 French Open for food poisoning that made her first few days in Paris a nightmare. Still, Pegula remains in the Top 5.

Following her semifinal run at Roland Garros, Beatriz Haddad Maia of Brazil has broken into the Top 10.

Karolina Muchova climbs 27 spots to a career-high No.16 following her first appearance in a Grand Slam final.

Biggest rises and new career-highs in the Top 100

New mom on Tour Elina Svitolina has made the biggest ascend of 119 spots to No.73, as the former world No.3 followed up her Strasbourg title with an impressive run to Roland Garros quarterfinals.

Mayar Sherif of Egypt lost in the second round of the French Open, but then went straight to Croatia where she saved six championship to prevail in the WTA 125 Makarska Open final against Jasmine Paolini. As a result of her outstanding performance, Sherif has soared 14 positions in the rankings, reaching a career-high No.40. Similarly, Paolini’s noteworthy achievements have propelled her to her best-ever ranking position, securing the No.42 spot.

Elina Avanesyan‘s extraordinary journey as the fifth lucky loser to reach the fourth round in a Grand Slam during the Open Era propelled her up the rankings by a staggering 54 places, landing her at No.80. Another notable achievement came from Sara Sorribes Tormo, who made her debut in the Grand Slam round of 16 and experienced a remarkable climb of 50 spots, securing the No.82 ranking position.

Croatian-born American Bernarda Pera played the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time and that result took her to a new career-high of No.27.

Nosedives in the updated WTA Top 100

Leylah Fernandez, who reached the quarterfinals of Roland Garros in 2022, experienced the most significant decline within the Top 100 rankings. The Canadian was unable to replicate her previous achievement and suffered a second-round exit at this year’s French Open, resulting in a drop of 46 spots, placing her at No.95.

Last year’s Roland Garros semifinalist Martina Trevisan got knocked out in the first round this time around and fell 39 spots to No.63.

The Nike Melbourne collection mostly combines green and light purple hues with a colorful abstract print that represents a topographic map.

As many as four WTA players are no longer wearing the Swoosh in 2023. Moreover, Nike’s top representative Naomi Osaka is absent because of pregnancy. Despite that, Nike continues to dominate the Tour.

Just like Sakkari, Liudmila Samsonova and K-Swiss also went for a crop top.

Moreover, Samsonova’s doubles outfit included a striped K-Swiss tank. The Russian’s doubles partner Veronika Kudermetova sported separates by Giorgio Armani — her fuchsia tank and skirt feature a bold touch of the monochromatic all-over animal print.

Former world No.1 Karolina Pliskova, Laura Siegemund and other Fila-sponsored players introduced the company’s Alley tennis collection.

On Pliskova we can see the Fila Women’s AO Merle Tank, a wide racerback design in a busy print, and the matching Fila Women’s AO Lou Skirt, featuring two-tiered pleats on just one side.

Donna Vekic started the new season with her own women’s line in partnership with Uomo Sport — Donna Sport.

Last year’s Australian Open runner-up Danielle Collins is seen wearing Alo Yoga apparel, but they are not officially her sponsor.

Sloane Stephens, joining Sofia Kenin as a representative of Free People Movement, wore a peach-colored pleated dress with a striped waistband. The item comes with matching fitted shorts to layer underneath.

Another pleated dress is offered by Lacoste, as we can see on Anett Kontaveit in Melbourne. The 2-in-1 piece features a covered zipper placket on the front and contrast binding at the armholes and collar.
