Details about US Open 2022 tennis fashion: Queen Serena’s Nike glam, Coco’s signature shoe, and more

The US Open has an unofficial title of the most fashionable Grand Slam. After our Australian Open, Roland Garros and Wimbledon apparel overviews, let’s have a look how sports clothing companies are taking tennis fashion to new heights in New York.

Serena Williams US Open 2022

Fitting for the occasion of her final US Open, Serena Williams wears a crystal-encrusted Nike dress, a matching black jacket, sparkly black NikeCourt Flare 2 shoes embellished by Serena Williams Jewelry, and a removable shiny cape, a statement garment that symbolizes the player’s royal status in the sport. Here’s a detailed illustrated description of the 23-time Grand Slam champion’s New York outfit.

Naomi Osaka US Open

Naomi Osaka lost in the first round and this time there was no much talk about her early exit. The attention was on other players and even her custom lilac Nike dress went by quite unnoticed, including her NikeCourt Air Zoom GP Turbo shoes inspired by her pet dog Butta.

Donna Vekic US Open 2022

Donna Vekic wore the Nike NY Slam Dress, an infamous design that Bianca Andreescu criticized for distracting her in windy conditions. Andreescu couldn’t play in this dress and quickly changed into another outfit — the Nike Fall New York Slam Tank and Short.

Bianca Andreescu US Open 2022

Defending champion Emma Raducanu sported the same ensemble from the Nike New York collection, only in different colors.

Tearful Andrea Petkovic waved goodbye to tennis after her loss to Belinda Bencic in the first round. Her final US Open outfit is from the Adidas x Thebe Magugu collection: the orange version of the Adidas New York Tank and Fall Gameset Match Skirt.

Fila‘s collaboration with Brandon Maxwell delivers the most outstanding collection at this year’s US Open.

Shelby Rogers US Open 2022 Fila

Shelby Rogers stole the show with her two-piece design that incorporates a racerback tank with adjustable straps and a detachable cropped textured mesh polo with a three-button ribbed placket. The unconventional polo is paired with a flared plaid skirt that has contrast color side pleats. This outfit exists in green and in red.

Karolina Pliskova‘s Fila x Brandon Maxwell Racer Tank includes overlapping panels in the front that create a keyhole detail. The pink and red top is complemented with a wrap-style pleated skirt in the same colorway.

Barbora Krejcikova

Barbora Krejcikova presented Fila’s famous Heritage collection. Every year, Fila launches a new iteration of the Heritage clothes, known for their timeless silhouettes and palettes. This year’s edition offers a classically unique spin on the brand’s iconic looks with magenta, turquoise, and yellow striped piecing, piping, and prints perfectly complemented with signature red, white, and blue details.

Here we can see Krejcikova in the Fila Fall Heritage Striped Racerback Tank and the Fila Fall Heritage Colorblock Skirt in magenta purple / navy.

World No.1 Iga Swiatek flies high in her Asics Gel Resolution 8 tennis shoes. Her green outfit includes the Asics Match Tank, featuring overlapping panels with a keyhole cutout on the back, and Match Skort, featuring textured mesh fabric overlay with pleats.

Coco Gauff US Open 2022

Coco Gauff‘s New Balance kit includes a busy top with short fishnet sleeves and a see-through black chevron-patterned skirt. The star of the show is definitely the teenager’s first signature sneaker: the Coco CG1.

Available in DigiCoco and Pompey colorways, the Coco CG1 is a unisex model influenced by basketball silhouettes and ’90s aesthetics.

Anett Kontaveit US Open 2022

Lacoste stands out with a combination of light yellow and purple. Anett Kontaveit‘s flared skort from the Fall collection has contrast printed bands on the side and is matched with a sleeveless yellow zipper tank.

Caroline Garcia US Open 2022

Caroline Garcia silently replaced Asics with Yonex last month. The Frenchwoman is wearing a Yonex dress with inner shorts in wine red.

Jelena Ostapenko US Open 2022

Jelena Ostapenko‘s designs by Latvian brand DK ONE always attract a lot of attention. This time the 2017 Roland Garros champion is channeling her inner Bethanie Mattek-Sands with this striking combination of an animal print and pink.

Leylah Fernandez US Open 2022

Last year’s US Open runner-up Leylah Fernandez represents Lululemon, a brand still paving its way on the Hologic WTA Tour.

Ajla Tomljanovic US Open 2022

Ajla Tomljanovic and her clothing sponsor Original Penguin opted for a floral print on a sleeveless dress design featuring a self-collar and a three-button placket.

Camila Giorgi gets a lot of compliments on her black lace Giomila outfit.

Creative training: How tennis players practice for the 2021 Australian Open in hotel room quarantine

This period leading to the 2021 Australian Open has been far from a smooth ride. As many as 72 players are now confined to their hotel rooms after being on flights with positive COVID-19 cases. Even though it’s extremely difficult to stay in form in such a strict lockdown, players are doing their best to motivate themselves to train hard every day. It’s sad that they are forced to practice in this way, but it’s also good to see how creative they are and determined to get through this two-week quarantine as winners.

Belinda Bencic was one of the most vocal complainers, but she calmed down and started working with what she has. However, her hitting this ball into the glass is making me anxious.

Hsieh Su-Wei is also testing the hotel windows.

Coco Gauff at least put a curtain as a barrier.

Ons Jabeur and her team use the mattress — the best solution, no noise, no broken glass.

Daria Kasatkina and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova are making fun of the bizarre situation.

Yulia Putintseva is frustrated, but she’s trying to focus on training (despite mice in her hotel rooms).

Heather Watson is running for miles in her room, playing tennis without a tennis ball and also uses furniture as a workout prop.

Iga Swiatek and Laura Siegemund seem to be having a good time.

Marta Kostyuk is using water bottles as weights.

All of you who got lazy during this pandemic can find motivation in these videos. There are no excuses. Just do it. It’s easy to complain, but work needs to be done, even if it means running 5 km within the constraints of a hotel room.

Cirstea, Putintseva, Bencic regret agreeing to play the 2021 Australian Open

Tennis players who are forced to quarantine in their hotel rooms for two weeks because some people on their flights to Melbourne have tested positive for COVID-19 are now complaining because they will not be able to practice properly and get ready for the demands of high-level competition.

Sorana Cirstea of Romania says that the rules changed overnight, as before deciding to fly to Australia she was informed that she would need to fully isolate only if her team member or cohort tests positive.

The most vocal on social media are Sorana Cirstea, Yulia Putintseva and Belinda Bencic, who decided to play the Australian Open assured that they would have daily five-hour quarantine exemption for practice, gym and rehab. Now it turns out that they can’t leave their hotel rooms at all for two weeks because someone on their flight received a positive coronavirus test.

The players are saying that they wouldn’t have agreed to play the tournament had they known about this rule. They had been informed that they would need to fully isolate only if their team member or cohort tests positive, but when they arrived in Melbourne they were faced with additional rules.

The problem is not the quarantine itself, but the fact that they are expected to compete at top level after spending 14 days on a couch. Moreover, it is unfair because players who were lucky not to have positive COVID-19 cases on their flight are now in great advantage over those who have to isolate.

To make things worse, Putintseva was confined in her room with a mouse and for over two hours nobody came to help her.

Things are getting more complicated by the day. I wouldn’t like to be in the shoes of the Australian Open organizers. Players are also having a tough time. Everyone is under so much pressure. Let’s hope that the situation will settle down. (photo: Jimmie48)

Photo recap: Favorites progress to third round in Abu Dhabi on Friday

The first half of second-round action completed at the Abu Dhabi WTA Women’s Tennis Open on Friday. It was a successful day for favorites at this WTA 500 event and photographer Jimmie48 was on the courts from start to finish.

Ons Jabeur of Tunisia

Playing Abu Dhabi on a career-high ranking of No.31, Ons Jabeur of Tunisia faced no break points in the second and third sets to overcome Ukrainian qualifier Kateryna Bondarenko 5-7 6-3 6-2, firing a total of 11 aces in the match. With daughter Eva supporting her from the stands, Bondarenko converted two out of ten break points in the first set.

The 15th-seeded Jabeur has now reached the third round or better in seven of the last eight tournaments she’s played.

Veronika Kudermetova of Russia

Beautiful blue courts, palm trees and the skills of our Jimmie48. This is our photo of the day. Veronika Kudermetova defeated Bianca Turati 6-2 6-1.

Sofia Kenin of the United States

This is Sofia Kenin warming up for her today’s second-round match against Kirsten Flipkens. Another stunning photo with palm trees. The orange colors of Fila’s Mad for Plaid collection look great in the sunny Abu Dhabi setting.

The top-seeded American advanced this Friday, but it was not a pleasant victory, as her opponent Kirsten Flipkens suffered a left ankle injury during the second set and had to retire at 5-7 5-4.

Kirsten Flipkens of Belgium

Fourth seed Aryna Sabalenka defeated Ajla Tomljanovic 7-5 6-4 in Friday’s second-round match and recorded her eleventh straight victory that includes back-to-back titles in the end of 2020.

Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus

Yulia Putintseva defeated Barbora Krejcikova 6-4 7-5.

Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan

Late in the day, Alize Cornet couldn’t handle Paula Badosa‘s outstanding performance and lost 6-4 6-4.

Alize Cornet of France

I’m also adding these nice black-and-white warm-up photos.

Rome PHOTOS: Halep, Muguruza, Vondrousova, Pliskova reach semifinals

All four quarterfinals were on Saturday’s schedule at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia and the last four women standing in Rome are Simona Halep, Garbine Muguruza, Marketa Vondrousova and Karolina Pliskova.

The first to book her spot in the semis was Simona Halep, who spent a very short time on the court as her opponent Yulia Putintseva retired injured. Halep will next play Garbine Muguruza, who fought past resurgent Victoria Azarenka.

Marketa Vondrousova lost just three games against Elina Svitolina and was later joined in the semifinals by fellow Czech Karolina Pliskova, who overcame a mid-match slump to beat Elise Mertens.

Our photographer Jimmie48 attended all these singles matches, as well as the doubles semifinal victory of Anna-Lena Friedsam and Raluca Olaru over Shuko Aoyama and Ena Shibahara. Enjoy his photo gallery!

Halep moves into Rome semis as Putintseva retires

Simona Halep became the first player to advance to the semifinals of the 2020 Internazionali BNL d’Italia, when her opponent Yulia Putintseva retired early in the second set.

The top-seeded Halep looked to be on a way to a routine victory over the world No.30 Putintseva, as she comfortably won the first set 6-2 and went 2-0 up in the second, when her Kazakh opponent, who received treatment on her lower back in-between sets, decided that she couldn’t go on.

Right after the match, Halep called her coach Darren Cahill and her team to come to the court and do some more hitting. Chair umpire Marija Cicak joked: “Do you want me to stay too?”

The world No.2 Halep is now on a 12-match winning streak. The Romanian’s semifinal opponent will be Garbine Muguruza.

Rome PHOTOS: Kenin, Bertens, Martic, Kontaveit out in the second round

Second-round action completed on Thursday at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia. Seeds Sofia Kenin, Kiki Bertens, Petra Martic and Anett Kontaveit didn’t make it to the third round, but one of these losses was particularly hard. Read on to find out the details and see all the photos our Jimmie48 took on another busy tennis day in Rome.

Svetlana Kuznetsova recorded another big three-set win by defeating 14th seed Anett Kontaveit 4-6 7-5 6-3 to advance to the third round where she’ll face Elina Svitolina. The Russian veteran shared some tennis/life wisdom after her match: “I think I’m done with expectations in my career. I just want to play. Expectations do nothing and bother you.”

Photo of the day: Sofia Kenin and Victoria Azarenka meet at the net after Azarenka’s 6-0 6-0 victory

Ninth seed Garbine Muguruza battled past Coco Gauff 7-6(3) 3-6 6-3, winning six of the last seven games after trailing 0-2 in the decider. The Spaniard’s third-round opponent will be last year’s Rome runner-up Johanna Konta, who recorded a commanding 6-0 6-4 win over Irina-Camelia Begu.

Eighth seed Petra Martic rallied from 1-5 down and saved a match point to take the second set in a tiebreak, but in the end lost to Yulia Putinseva 6-3 6-7(2) 6-4.

The highlight of the day was definitely Victoria Azarenka‘s 6-0 6-0 destruction of reigning Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin. I’m sure nobody expected such a dominant victory for Vika! The Belarusian’s third-round obstacle will be Daria Kasatkina, who beat Katerina Siniakova 6-2 6-3. For the first time in five matches will Azarenka not face an opponent who is a Grand Slam champion.

Twelfth seed Marketa Vondrousova got past qualifier Arantxa Rus in straight sets and will next play against Polona Hercog, the Slovenian who upset fifth seed Kiki Bertens 6-4 6-4.

Tuesday’s Rome recap + singles and doubles first-round photos

Jimmie48 is delivering another wonderful set of photos from the Internazionali BNL d’Italia. My favorites in today’s gallery are doubles photos, especially the black-and-white ones of Elina Svitolina and Dayana Yastremska. Let’s do a little recap of Tuesday’s first-round matches and then enjoy the photos in the end.

The biggest upset today was pulled off by Katerina Siniakova, as the Czech recorded her first-ever victory against three-time major champion Angelique Kerber in just 69 minutes, 6-3 6-1.

Ninth seed Garbine Muguruza triumphed in an encounter of two Grand Slam winners, beating Sloane Stephens 6-3 6-3, the player who had defeated her in their sole meeting on clay last year at Roland Garros.

After defeating Ons Jabeur last month at Lexington, Coco Gauff repeated the feat in Rome, battling back from a 4-2 deficit in the opening set to advance to the second round with a 6-4 6-3 victory. The 16-year-old Gauff, currently ranked 53rd, is already a household name in the tennis world, so it’s hard to acknowledge that the American was playing her first tour-level main draw match on clay.

Seed No.14 Anett Kontaveit defeated Caroline Garcia 6-3 7-6(1). The Internazionali BNL d’Italia is the tournament where the Estonian recorded her sole win over a reigning No.1, in 2017 against Kerber.

Our Jimmie48 made it to all the above-mentioned matches, as well as to seed No.12 Marketa Vondrousova‘s 6-1 4-6 6-4 win over qualifier Misaki Doi, qualifier Arantxa Rus‘ upset of Iga Swiatek 7-6(5) 6-3, and Yulia Putintseva‘s 6-2 6-4 victory over Rebecca Peterson.

We also have wonderful photos of Simona Halep‘s and Monica Niculescu‘s dominant doubles triumph over Elina Svitolina and Dayana Yastremska, 6-0 6-1. My favorites are the pre-match photos of the Ukrainian doubles team! Moreover, Sofia Kenin and Bethanie Mattek-Sands were wearing masks after their doubles match, but we could still see notice their good mood and wide smiles, even though they lost to Anna-Lena Friedsam and Raluca Olaru in the first round.

Jennifer Brady powers into US Open semifinals

American world No.41 Jennifer Brady needed only 69 minutes to beat Yulia Putintseva for the first time in their three career meetings and become the first player to advance to the semifinals of the 2020 US Open.

The 28th-seeded Brady raced to a 4-0 lead to open the match and even though Putintseva got one break back, the American confidently took the first set. Seed No.23 Putintseva again couldn’t hold serve early in a set as Brady went 2-0 up in the second and although the Kazakh managed to level at 2-2, Brady reeled off the next four consecutive games to record another emphatic victory this fortnight, 6-3 6-2.

Brady is through to her first Grand Slam semifinals and has lost just 24 games so far at the tournament, the fewest of anyone left in the draw. Before the US Open, the 25-year-old dropped the fewest games en route to a title in 2020 during her run to the Lexington trophy (24), where she won 40 of 43 service games.

Next up for Brady will be the winner of today’s second quarterfinal, either fourth seed Naomi Osaka or American Shelby Rogers. (photo: Jimmie48)

Brisbane PHOTOS: Brady battles past Sharapova, Stephens & Vekic knocked out

First-round action continued at the Brisbane International on Tuesday. The day was marked by the upsets of Sloane Stephens and Donna Vekic by qualifiers and Maria Sharapova’s return to competition.

Eighth seed Madison Keys opened the season with a solid 6-3 6-2 victory over Czech qualifier Marie Bouzkova, getting 70% of first serves in and winning 81% of points behind her first serve.

Sloane Stephens was knocked out in the first round 6-4 2-6 6-3, falling to Russian world No.129 Liudmila Samsonova, who had progressed past Kaylah McPhee, Kristina Mladenovic and Marta Kostyuk to make the main draw. Another successful qualifier on Tuesday was Yulia Putintseva, who recorded a tight 6-3 3-6 7-5 win over Donna Vekic.

Third seed Naomi Osaka has extended her winning streak to 12 matches, coming back from 0-2 in the decider to beat new Adidas representative Maria Sakkari 6-2 6-7(4) 6-3. The Japanese fired 16 aces and was broken only once during the first-round match.

Converting her third match point, sixth seed Kiki Bertens eliminated Dayana Yastremska in three sets, 6-4 1-6 6-3. Petra Kvitova reeled off 12 of the last 13 games to defeat Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 2-6 6-1 6-0.

The 2015 Brisbane champion Maria Sharapova was playing her first match since August 2019 and fell to American qualifier Jennifer Brady, 3-6 6-1 7-6(3), who was broken just once in their encounter and won 74% of both first and second serves. Brady hit four winners less than Sharapova (27 to 31), but made 24 less unforced errors (15 to 39). Brady’s next opponent will be Australian world No.1 Ashleigh Barty. The 147th-ranked Sharapova now waits to see whether she’ll be awarded an Australian Open main-draw wildcard.
