“Geez, it feels hot out there. It feels like I was sweating in a sauna” was the comment of Caroline Wozniacki, who tried to picture herself in Alaska, even though the plastic of her water bottle was melting, and with the help of ice towels swept past Lourdes Dominguez Lino 6-0 6-2 and into the second round of the Australian Open.

Victoria Azarenka successfully started her quest for her third successive title at the Grand Slam, but the success did involve a fair share of trouble, as Johanna Larsson served twice to take the first set, but missed those chances and surrendered the set in the tiebreaker and Azarenka found her rhythm in the second set to advanced to R2 7-6(2) 6-2.

Agnieszka Radwanska got past fiery and resilient Yulia Putintseva who recovered from a 0-6 demolition in the first set to push Radwanska to the limits before giving her a 6-0 5-7 6-2 victory. Jelena Jankovic also found her feet in the heat and booked her place in the second round with a 6-1 6-2 win over Misaki Doi.
