After Petra Kvitova became the sole player to reach the quarterfinals of the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix on Wednesday, the rest of the second-round matches completed on Thursday and it was a good day for seeded players with the exception of defending champion and fourth seed Karolina Pliskova, who was stunned by fellow former world No.1 Victoria Azarenka.

Top seed Naomi Osaka made a successful start to her claycourt season, dispatching Hsieh Su-Wei in straight sets and setting up a quarterfinal meeting with Donna Vekic, who got past Daria Kasatkina in the second round.

Eighth seed Anett Kontaveit made quick work of Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and will next face mom Azarenka, who reached the quarterfinals by recording her first Top 5 victory on clay in four years.

Seventh seed Anastasia Sevastova opened Thursday’s second-round action by eliminating 2017 Stuttgart champion and 2016 runner-up Laura Siegemund, booking an encounter with Kvitova.

Sixth seed Kiki Bertens overcame Belinda Bencic in three sets and will play fifth seed Angelique Kerber, who won an all-German battle against Andrea Petkovic.
