San Jose PHOTOS: First round wraps up on Tuesday

First-round action continued at the Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic on Tuesday and the match of the day was Bethanie Mattek Sands‘ triumph over Venus Williams, as the 35-year-old who has recovered from a knee injury recorded her first singles victory since last year’s French Open and her first singles win on hardcourts since the 2017 Miami Open.

Croatia’s fifth seed Donna Vekic opened Tuesday’s schedule with a tough three-setter against Misaki Doi 6-4 3-6 6-4. The 23-year-old Vekic later visited the Facebook headquarters and our photographer Jimmie48 accompanied her there. In the second round, Vekic will face Victoria Azarenka, who fought past French qualifier Harmony Tan, 6-2 6-4.

Also in the opening round, American Madison Brengle scored a 6-0 6-3 win over Andrea Petkovic, who launched the red version of Stella McCartney’s stunning Adidas Fall Tank. By the way, three players from this photo gallery have made my July’s fashion favorites list which will soon be published at the official WTA website — the other two are Venus Williams in her EleVen Bonita collection and Bethanie Mattek-Sands in comic-inspired Super Girl range by Lucky in Love.

We also have photos from the match between Zheng Saisai and Heather Watson, which the Chinese won 6-3 6-1.
