Four seeded players were in second-round action at the Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic on Wednesday and all four advanced to the quarterfinals.

Playing her first match on hardcourts this season, top seed Elina Svitolina made a winning start in San Jose, beating wildcard Daria Kasatkina 6-3 6-1 and extending H2H record against the Russian to 5-0. In the quarterfinals, Svitolina will face seed No.7 Maria Sakkari of Greece, who had to come back from a set down against Japanese qualifier Mayo Hibi earlier in the day to advance, 4-6 6-4 6-2.

Second seed Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus recorded a 6-3 6-3 win over American wildcard Coco Vandeweghe, who was playing her first tournament since last year’s Asian Swing. Up next, Sabalenka will play sixth seed Carla Suarez Navarro, who eliminated another player building an injury comeback, American Bethanie Mattek-Sands, 3-6 6-1 6-2.

Wednesday, August 31st, was also a big day for Victoria Azarenka, who celebrated her 30th birthday on tournament grounds. At the end of Jimmie48‘s gallery, you can see Vika blowing up candles.

The second half of second-round matches will take place on Thursday.
