We’ve seen the WTA calendar for the beginning of the 2021 season and it’s been confirmed that the Australian Open has been pushed back to February 8th, while now we’re learning that the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells has been postponed due to coronavirus concerns.
This decision was made after thorough consultation with state and local health authorities and tournament owner Larry Ellison. The BNP Paribas Open typically takes place for two weeks in March; this year it was originally scheduled for March 8-21. The combined ATP and WTA event will release details about the new dates in the near future.
Last year, the BNP Paribas Open was not played because of the pandemic — actually, the long tennis hiatus started with the cancellation of the Indian Wells tournament (two smaller WTA events in China had been cancelled previously, but they were scheduled for April). (photo: Jimmie48)
